Girs soccer team makes history with ‘no regrets’

Girs soccer team makes history with no regrets

March 8th marked the end of another in a history of memorable seasons as Cathedral Catholic girls soccer was crowned the Southern California Regional Division II champions after defeating West Hills Chaminade at Warren High in Downey.

The Dons have a history of achieving championships at a variety of levels. Named CIF SoCal champions this year and back in 2008, the Dons have also participated in over 23 CIF tournaments in 27 years, and 21 Western League championships in 28 years.

Senior Kelly Bieraugel, with 3 goals and 10 assists for that match, said, “I thoroughly enjoyed the season and am so proud of my team!”

She, along with seniors Jessica Bakan, Courtney Brown, Mikaela Kraus and Lindy Porritt, ended with a Dons career record of 73 wins, 25 losses, and 18 ties as four-year varsity players. Three-year varsity player Tara Young ended with a Dons career record of 59-18-13, while two- year varsity player senior Natalie Teles will be leaving the team with a record of 44-11-9.

Kelly, along with the other senior girls, seems to have enjoyed her time as a Lady Don soccer player. She said, “I was able to bond with my team and am so proud to call myself a Dons soccer player. Coach Lee was always supportive and helpful.”

As for Coach Lee herself, this year’s wrap-up seemed to have been altogether positive and simultaneously sentimental.

The team adopted a mantra to describe this landmark season, clearly stating that they would have a “season with no regrets.”

The team participated in the first CCHS Butch Lee Championship. Coach Butch Lee, Coach Dawn Lee’s father, preceded his daughter as the Dons girls soccer coach. A December 5th 1-0 win over Torrey Pines High School pushed daughter Dawn’s coaching record over 243 total career wins, thus matching her father’s total.

Coach Lee has served as Dons coach with a record of 268-92-57, with more seasons to come.

“This season as a whole was absolutely amazing! You set goals as a team and have high hopes, but I don’t think accomplishing all that we did this year was ever in our wildest dreams,” Coach Dawn Lee said.
