Ambassadors, Campus Ministers answer Call for Angels

Ambassadors, Campus Ministers answer Call for Angels

Cathedral Catholic High School students volunteered their time to help raise funds for Nativity Prep Academy (NPA) students on October 9th. The event, named “Calling All Angels”, was held at an estate in Olivenhain.

The purpose of the event was to raise money for NPA student’s tuition. NPA, an inner city school in south east San Diego, runs totally off donations and receives no government or diocese funding. The Academy focuses on breaking the cycle of drugs, violence, gangs, and other prevalent substances in urban communities. Attendees also learned of opportunities where they could work one on one with students at the academy by counseling, tutoring, and mentoring.

Due to a scheduling mix-up for services by ambassadors, there was a last-minute need for volunteers. CCHS students from ambassadors and campus ministry quickly gathered their friends to help out at the event. Because of the willingness of the students to volunteer, there was plenty of enough help to keep the event running smoothly. Several students from nativity prep even showed up to help and were selected to draw the grand prize raffle tickets.

“The event was very easy to work,” said Senior campus minister Emmet Kearney. “All the directions were very clear, and I was glad to work for such a good cause. I truly felt like I was helping to do something good for NPA.”

Jobs of the volunteers included setting up the auction and food table, preparing the food, serving tea and beverages, and general hosting. When the event came to an end, students helped the auction and raffle winners carry their prizes out to their cars. Some of the main auction items consisted of artwork by NPA students, and gift baskets donated by local businesses and families.

Entertainment for the guests included comedians, one of whom was Alonzo Bodden, who was the season three winner of Last Comic Standing.
